AIMS AND ACTIVITIES

The primary aim of RNBWS is to provide a forum for the exchange of information and observations of seabirds, and of landbirds at sea, by members for whom Birdwatching is first and foremost a hobby, and to provide advice and support to make best use of such opportunities at sea. The secondary aim is to co-ordinate the efforts of individual members using standardised recording methods, so that observations can be of value to the professional ornithologist ashore. RNBWS has close links with many other Organisations and Societies around the world.RNBWS has built up a reporting system using standardised recording forms - passage reports covering both seabirds and landbirds, seabirds census sheets, and for birds examined in the hand. The society has established a number of local representatives, both in home ports and in ports overseas, to provide a focus for Birdwatching activities when in harbour, or ashore.

RNBWS 2009 Field Programme - Mark Cutts

January 11th 09:00 (Sunday) Pennington Marsh & Keyhaven

An early year walk around the excellent sites of Pennington Marshes and Keyhaven. The regular ducks, waders and geese should be present with a chance at Slavonian Grebe, Spotted Redshank, Bar-tailed Godwit and hopefully the over wintering Red-breasted Goose. Please e-mail (new e-mail address at bottom of page) or phone to indicate interest and I will confirm exact meet location

February 22nd 09:30 (Sunday) Blashford Lakes & Blackwater Arboretum

A day out with the winter ducks and geese, with the resident Great White Egret plus all the woodland finches.  Afterwards a move into the forest for the regular Hawfinch roost at the Arboretum.  Hopefully this will be a joint outing with AOS.
Meet in the reserve car park SU151083 (contact me if you require directions)

April 18th to 26th Gibraltar & Southern Spain

This is a rough outline at this time as in previous years, circumstances have forced us to cancel this trip. Availability and numbers will determine its viability. All AOS and RAFOS members are encouraged to express interest.
Our objective would be to view raptor and stork migration from the top of the rock and to visit Tarifa in Spain (22km from Gib) for the large groups of seabirds which congregate there.
The actual itinerary will be published nearer the time.

September 11th to 13th Portland Weekend

Weekend trip to our favourite site at this peak time for migrant movement.
AOS are also booked in the obs for this weekend.
For Day visitors Saturday or Sunday, meet at the obs balcony
between 09:00 – 10:00, a call on the mobile would be appreciated.

November 22nd 09:00 (Sunday) Titchfield Haven

Meet at the Sailing Club for a day on the reserve.
Grebes, ducks and waders, with hopefully a Bittern!
